Marukyu Koyamaen - Wako
Brand: Marukyu Koyamaen
Origin: Uji, Kyoto
Vibrant and full-bodied, with a fresh aroma of cut grass and a clean, polished character throughout. The palate opens with a gentle natural sweetness and soft nutty undertones, moving into a warm, floral mid-note before settling into a long, pleasant sweetness on the finish. Minimal bitterness and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel make every sip feel composed and refined.
Wako (和光), meaning "concealing the light of wisdom without revealing it," was bestowed by Hashimoto Gyōin, the former head priest of Yakushi-ji Temple - inspired by the Taoist philosophy of quiet, understated excellence.
Recommended Use: As the highest grade in Marukyu Koyamaen's usucha (thin tea) lineup, its elegance is best appreciated on its own, where the nuanced sweetness and florals can shine without distraction. For lattes, note that Wako's refined character can be softened by milk - a slightly higher dose of 3–4g is recommended to preserve its presence, and it pairs best with lighter milks such as full-cream dairy or light oat
